- Its tentative title was "The King of Fighters 2004" though this name was debunked by the end of 2004.[1] The numerical distinction for the series is based primarily on SNK Playmore wanting to avoid being locked into a rigorous yearly schedule of releases.
- This game, along with The King of Fighters '98 (and its updated version), The King of Fighters 2003, The King of Fighters XII, The King of Fighters XIII and The King of Fighters XV, are the only games of the series in which the character BGM plays after the round announce.
- This game and The King of Fighters 2003 are also the only games of the series in which the BGM is interrupted after the end of the match.
- This game, The King of Fighters 2003 and The King of Fighters XII are the only games of the series without a color screen after defeating the last member of the opposing team. This feature comes back in KOF XIII.
- This game, The King of Fighters XIII, The King of Fighters XIV and The King of Fighters XV are the only of the series which the hero/protagonist and a rival/deuteragonist of a saga/story arc are on a same team.
- In this game and the next two installments, every character has only one winpose by default, barring any special ones.
