Terry Bogard (テリー・ボガード) is the main protagonist of the Fatal Fury series. He has appeared in every Fatal Fury and King of Fighters game, and is one of the characters of choice to symbolize the company in crossover games, merchandise and publicity. He appears to fit many Japanese stereotypes for an American character in appearance, personality and speech (his in-game vocabulary is usually limited to American colloquialisms, such as "Okay!" and "Hey, c'mon, c'mon!").
Terry Bogard is the elder brother of Andy Bogard. Both of them were orphan children adopted by Jeff Bogard. He is often referred to as the "Legendary Hungry Wolf" (from Garou Densetsu, meaning "Legend of the Hungry Wolf"). He has a pet monkey named Ukee (the previous mascot of SNK before Terry). He has a knack for scoring in basketball, which explains the creation of his Power Dunk move. His official nickname is "The Legendary Wolf" (
Development
Terry originates in Capcom’s fighting game Street Fighter. In an interview, Hiroshi Matsumoto mentions the Caucasian man who wore a leather jacket during the opening sequence of Street Fighter I. Despite appearing in the opening, he was not found in the actual game. At the time they had already decided that the main character for Street Fighter I would be a dougi-clad karate fighter, but the devs wanted to include the Caucasian man in the next game if given the opportunity. The mysterious man ended up being the model for Terry. [6]
In Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Terry received a re-design as the devs thought his design was outdated. [7] Nobuyuki Kuroki mentions how many of the staff that worked on The King of Fighters XIV came from the Fatal Fury series, so the team had sentimental feelings towards Terry and Geese. [8] Eisuke Ogura showed difficulty finalizing Terry's new design and Terry's model was recreated and polished up to four times, along with many retakes by the motion capture team. [8] Due to the hard work and positive feedback by the fans, Kuroki felt satisfied. [8]
Appearance
Terry is often depicted as an adult Caucasian male with a well-built muscular physique and long blonde hair, usually sporting a ponytail. He is often recognized wearing a red jacket with a white star marked on the back, white shirt, blue jeans, fingerless gloves, sneakers, and a red baseball cap as his signature accessory. Throughout most of his appearances, his overall design sought out different variations.

Starting in his debut at Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, Terry's attire was more distinguishable from the usual overall impression, as he was seen wearing a longer sleeved red jacket that was rolled up to his elbows. and white sneakers. His official artworks drawn by Shinkiro has minor details that could not be added in his sprites due to limitations, which includes a white circular patch on his jacket, and the NEO-GEO logo on his cap, though that it can be seen in his in-game renders at the VS screen. His sprites also apparently seen him wearing hi-tops that differentiates his artwork as he is seen wearing normal sneakers.
Terry in KOF '98. This is his most "classic" design that's often seen in many of his appearances.
In Fatal Fury 2, his attire from the previous game made some significant tweaks that it became his default look on many of his appearances. His jacket now has no sleeves, the sleeves of his white shirt were torn off, his fingerless gloves have rectangular cuts on the back of each of his hands as they were supposedly biker gloves, and his sneakers are two-toned with red and white. While his in-game appearances could not display a logo on his cap, his original artwork for FF2 is seen with the NEO-GEO logo like his FF1 artwork. However, in the promotional artworks by Shiroi Eiji, and Terry's portrait artwork by Shinkiro in Fatal Fury Special, his cap is having the Fatal Fury logo, as it is the most used logo for his cap. With that logo included, it is at his most recognizable design that is used often of his many appearances including Real Bout Special, RB2, the majority of the King of Fighters series, the Capcom vs SNK crossovers, Fighting EX Layer, Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Street Fighter 6.

In Fatal Fury 3 and Real Bout Fatal Fury, while his attire is nearly identical to his FF2 appearance, it was slightly tweaked. His white shirt is a full t-shirt with sleeves, and the logo on his cap reads "KING OF THE FIGHTERS," enclosed in a blue rectangle. In his in-game appearance, the logo on his cap is only seen as a blue rectangle. His appearances in the series of the Fatal Fury anime directed by Masami Obari had him to dress identical for his FF1 long-sleeved version for Fatal Fury: Legend of the Hungry Wolf and his classic no-sleeves version in both Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle and Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture, while his iconic cap added a silver plate for all three of the anime.
Terry's timeskip appearance in Garou: Mark of the Wolves, which it is also well-received from fans.
Terry also made a drastic change of his appearance that became a fan-favorite alternate outfit, starting in his appearance in Garou: Mark of the Wolves. In this attire, he no longer wears his iconic cap, his hair was cut shorter to the length of his shoulders, and exchanged his red jacket into a brown leather flight jacket with a star on a blue circle marked on the back and a text reads "RUNNING WILD" under it. The jacket also has another star logo enclosed in a blue ring and a text that reads "AIRBORNE", patched on the left sleeve or both, and a white labeled patch on the left side at front with the "AIRBORNE" text on it. This appearance is well-received from longtime fans that it also makes appearances in KOF 2003, KOF XI, and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. It also makes an appearance as an alternate costume in KOF Maximum Impact, KOF XV as a pre-order bonus DLC and Street Fighter 6, while in KOF Maximum Impact 2, it is used an EX form of Terry, under the on-screen name as "Wild Wolf."
Terry in KOF XIV
In KOF XIV, Terry sports a variation of his overall impression that seems to resemble his FF1 appearance, longer sleeves on his jacket and all, only that the sleeves folded back to midway of his forearms. The jacket also added white stripes on the front, a patch that reads "'91 Running Wild" stitch on the left sleeve, two buttoned pocket protectors on the front, and two cursive texts that reads "Get in the Ring!" and "Live to Fight" marked above and below the star at the back. He also wears padded fingerless black gloves and his cap has a new logo that reads "HUNGRY WOLF" with a face of a wolf on a shield above the text. While it is a fair shake-up of his usual look, this design did not stick as in his appearance in KOF XV reverted back to his classic design as the illustrator of KOF XV, Tomohiro Nakata, stated that he's fan of Terry showing his muscular arms.
Terry in KOF: Destiny
In the Chinese CG animated webseries The King of Fighters Destiny, and the mobile game based on the same name, Terry's usual attire has seen some minor details added, most notably a gray sleeveless hoodie under his red jacket, a full white t-shirt like his FF3 appearance, a silver belt buckle that resembles a face of a wolf, and having a silver plate on his hat like his FF anime appearances, only with the Fatal Fury logo engraved on it.
Terry with his gender swapped in his appearance of SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy
In SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy, under the effects of Kukri's pocket dimension, Terry has transformed into a female version of himself. His default outfit is basically a skimpier version of his classic attire, as jacket is shorter, shirt is replaced into a tube top and jeans into a distressed denim hi-cut shorts. In addition, he also sported ringed bracelets on each of his wrists. and the logo of his iconic cap changed from "Fatal Fury" into "Fatal Cutie." While he is included in the game as a gender-swapped form, his in-game ending did not follow this predicament, as it was just a dream recreating Geese's death scene with Terry only back in his male form. It is noted that this game isn't the first time a female Terry transformation is seen, as Terry would change into female from the effects of Demitri Maximoff's Midnight Bliss super move in SNK vs Capcom: SVC Chaos, which he also sported the denim shorts.
Terry in KOF for Girls
In the mobile dating simulator game, The King of Fighters for Girls, amongst various outfits depending on events, Terry changed his usual jacket into a red varsity jacket with black trimmings and white upper sleeves. The jacket also has a large red "W" patch at the right side of the front, although it is currently unknown what does it stand for (possibly "Wolf" or "Wild"). It also has a white star with wing-like blocks at the sides and a text that reads "Since 1991" marked under, along with a red star enclosed in a ring with wings marked on each sleeves.
Personality
Terry Bogard is an incredibly charismatic, cheerful and friendly man with everyone around him, given/despite his rough past growing up.
In spite of seeming rather playful and/or insensitive to others in his dialogue especially when in combat, Terry truly bears no ill will towards anyone other than the truly malicious and outright irredeemable; this mainly applies to foes such as the likes of Geese Howard, the killer of his adoptive father, and the psychopathic Ryuji Yamazaki.
His relationship with Andy is that of respect, recognizing his younger brother as his fiercest rival despite Terry himself being the better fighter of the two. Be it in fighting, travels, or simply hanging out, Andy is the most affable and solid companion that he has, along with Joe. He feels a sense of kinship with Blue Mary for her loss, and the two developed a long time relationship with some hints of romance. He treats Rock as his son as he teasingly calls him "Rookie", but allows him to choose his own path in life. Terry is also well-informed of what goes on in the streets.
Even then, a common recurring gag is due to Terry's habit of only doing part-time work to get by, he tends to rack up a notable tab at the places he often eats out at.
Powers
- Sense: Terry can sense the presence of people nearby.
- Ergokinesis: Terry has an incredible power of energy, that he uses when gathering chi energy from Gaia.
- Gather Chi: Terry can gather chi energy from Gaia, the mother-earth.
- Power Wave: Terry can fire a projectile of energy that travels through the ground, or form an explosive area-of-effect strike known as Round Wave.
- Power Geyser: By punching the ground, Terry can make a more powerful version of the Power Wave, creating a massive geyser of energy coming from below the ground. He can either summon extra rows of geysers with a single punch, punch a few more times for one extra each, or wave his fist around to create more in one setting.
- Energy Attacks: Terry can use chi energy to increase the damage of his normal attacks.
- Burn Knuckle/Quick Burn: Terry can surround his fist in energy to deliver a fierce punch.
- Crack Shoot: Terry can surround his legs in energy and utilize it for a powerful jumping axe kick.
- Create Fire: Terry can create fire via an improved version of his Fire Kick move.
Skills
- Acrobatics: Terry is very proficient with acrobatics in his fighting, using moves like Crack Shoot and Rising Tackle.
- Adaptability: Due to his training in various fighting techniques, Terry can adapt with any opponent he faces. This also can comically add to being able to analyze things at first glance (especially women's measurements).
- Resilience: Terry can take a lot of punishment when fighting brutish opponents like Wolfgang Krauser and Grant.
- Survival: Terry lived and grew up on the mean streets of Southtown and other parts of the USA where survival was an everyday battle.
- Basketball: The cornerstone of Terry's agility and fighting style, being especially skilled at shooting 3-pointers.
Fighting Style
Terry uses a mixture of boxing, karate, kung fu, kickboxing and street fighting moves to create a very unique fighting style, mixed in with chi techniques learned from his Hakkyokuseiken master, Tung Fu Rue. He had also learned martial arts directly from his adoptive father, Jeff Bogard. Other sources state his fighting experience was also gained from brawling on the streets for years to hone proper techniques for himself, where he tested out varying methods of fighting to his tastes.
Terry is an all-around fighter, with extensive knowledge of many martial arts techniques. He uses many variations of punches, such as hooks and uppercuts and can also kick with ease. A majority of his techniques have a "power naming" motif, via Power Wave, Power Drive, Power Shoot and Power Geyser. Two of his signature moves, the Crack Shoot and Power Dunk, were inspired by Terry's love for basketball, in which the latter move was enhanced in The King of Fighters XIV and was renamed the "Star Dunk Volcano".
In later years, Terry also developed a technique that ties into his wolf motif, named the Buster Wolf. He also in a few instances, creates a technique that has the same input scheme as Geese's Deadly Rave (as a possible tribute), known as the Rising Beat, which first debuted in SvC Chaos. Terry also pays tribute to Geese's son Rock by having his own version of his stronger-version Shine Knuckle, the Rising Force (which acts as his HSDM/MAX2DM).
