Main page layout update

Hullo! I am Kirkburn, your friendly local Wikia Gaming Helper!

Hopefully you have read about the skin and ad changes at Wikia's New Style on Central Wikia. If not, I hope you'll have a look.

One of the changes is a block of two ads on each main page. It's possible that they won't always show up, but to ensure your main page continues to work properly when they do, you need to update your main page column formatting code with new column tags.

I have drafted a main page using the new tags on User:Kirkburn/Dev which I hope you can take a look at - feel free to make a copy and edit it. Though the layout may seem restrictive at first, there really is a fair amount you can do with them - for example see these customized main pages - Muppet Wiki, WoWWiki, FFXIclopedia. You may want to chat with your wiki community about what direction to take with a new main page.

If you encounter any problems with the new tags, please let us know.

My apologies for any inconvenience these changes bring.
Thank you for your time, Kirkburn (talk) 10:56, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

I don't know. Visually speaking, it looks a little obtrusive, like it's a little too organized. I never really noticed the ads that much to begin with. I'm indifferent to the new setup. Sake neko 04:31, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
I've given it some tweaks and updates to the layout to try and give a better representation and show the latest content - what do you think of it now? Kirkburn (talk) 09:51, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
I have switched to the new layout - I hope it is easy to work with. Kirkburn (talk) 14:57, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Do we really have to use this layout? Because I prefer the old one. If we really HAVE to use this layout, I think we have to change the Main Page's template. I'm gonna need some help with that. -- Mr.Kraken 15:26, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
I've got to agree with our Admin here in saying I preferred the old layout before any tweaks were done to it. I'm not too big a fan of it the way it is now. Kyosei 22:38, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Does anyone else have the problem of a laggy main page? Sometimes the newer edits don't even show up on the "recent changes" bar until I visit another page. Sake neko 07:03, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Hey everyone, what do you think about the changes I've made to the Main Page? -- Mr.Kraken 20:52, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

I miss the SNK logo, but it's all right. Maybe we can roulette the images randomly? Sake neko 20:55, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
I really have no clue where to put the logo. About rouletting the images randomly, do you know how to do that? But you know, those images are specific - they link to categories. -- Mr.Kraken 21:05, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
No I don't. I'm not that good with html. Also, no more news anymore? Maybe we should PM that one guy to take a look back over here. Those ads are kinda killin... Sake neko 21:48, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
Indeed they are... I'm gonna PM him, let's see what he'll say. I'll put the news back in the Main Page as well. -- Mr.Kraken 11:23, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
Maybe we can rearrange the main page to look kinda like the Nintendo wiki instead? That way we can include other SNK related wikias on the main page. A poll sounds interesting too but I doubt many people will partake in it... Sake neko 23:58, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

How about changing the main page so intead of having to mnually update the list of recent articles, there's just a link to the automated "most recent articles" page? Otherwise it might make it look like it's not updated enough, as one miht want to handle a missing article, but forget to update the main page... IkariLoona 17:16, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Main(?) page title

Wouldn't it be wise to do away with the SvC/Capcom references that are by default assined as the page title that shows up at the browser bar? Especially considering there's also a mention of an unexisting "SNK vs. Capcom 2"... IkariLoona 17:16, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Well, the only way to change the title is to either a) contact a wikia rep or b) ask an admin/wiki owner to change it. Given that the admin hasn't logged in for a while it's probably better to contact wikia directly about it. The current title was added by a wikia rep anyways. Kyosei 03:47, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
It comes from MediaWiki:Pagetitle. Any particular suggestions for what an updated version should be? Ping me if you come up with something!
Alternatively, you may want to consider adopting the wiki, btw, as the admin has been away a while - see w:Wikia:Adoption requests. Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 16:28, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. A quicky-thought title alternative could be "SNK's games, hardware, characters, artists and more", for a more accurate twist on what we have now on display.
The adminship candidacy looks tempting, but my visits have been irregular (Final Fantasy XI and TV Tropes don't help...), so perhaps one of the more frequent editors would be a better candidate... Still, I'll keep an eye on this page for replies, maybe I'll try if noone else steps up to the task. IkariLoona 18:37, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, for the sake of google hits via keywords better alternatives to have in the title would be Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown or Fatal Fury as these are based on the most popularly visited pages on this wiki. Kyosei 01:27, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Good point - it's probably best to use terms that match the "Most visited pages" mentioned in the Special pages. Speaking of which, I really wish we had a "What links here" link next to others like "Recent changes" and "Special pages". IkariLoona 13:17, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
The "What links to here" link is still on the page, it's just been moved to the bottom of whatever article you're reading. Though I must admit I kind of miss its old spot in the sidebar layout myself. Kyosei 01:52, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

I've updated the pagetitle with a suggestion from IkariLoona. :) Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 10:34, September 11, 2009 (UTC)

Nice, thanks! Still, for some reason only the main page retains the old title, even after reloading... odd... BTW, no adminship takers to handle that sort of stuff locally?... IkariLoona 17:35, September 11, 2009 (UTC)
I wouldn't mind taking adminship here, but only really to be around to take care of the usual maintaining duties such as blocking vandals, deleting spam and such. I won't be able to volunteer myself though until next week though since I was made an admin at another wiki a little over 2 months ago. Need a three month cooldown to apply. Non-SNK Content

I don't think articles on non-SNK content (such as the Fighter's History series, Breakers, and the Fatal Fury movies) should not even exist and should be moved to Wikia Gaming. SNK didn't even create any of that stuff! 05:32, March 7, 2010 (UTC)

They also didn't create Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer, any of the ADK-related games like World Heroes in case you didn't notice but we added it anyways because it was on the Neo Geo, a SNK console system, and thus enough of a reason for us to include it. Fighter's History and other games are included for the same reason. Why wouldn't we include animes that are SNK related? SNK Wiki tries to include anything about SNK no matter how minor the relation. Plus in the case of Fighter's History, SNK bought some of the rights to include the franchise into The King of Fighters universe with Makoto Mizoguchi. Kyosei 05:49, March 7, 2010 (UTC)
All of the non-SNK stuff you mentioned aren't SNK-related enough to be in this Wiki. All of the Neo Geo games SNK didn't create don't even relate to that company, not one bit. In this Wiki, there should be articles only on content originally created by SNK (such as pachinko and Garou Densetsu: Memories of Stray Wolves). The SNK-based anime were not created by SNK, a game company. They (including their exclusive characters) are copyrighted to their respective animation studios. The character designers in the anime at least mostly based their characters off of those in the games. The articles on non-SNK games are best suitable for Wikia Gaming, while the anime are more suited to Wikia Entertainment. Just because a game is at least released on the Neo Geo doesn't mean it should be included in SNK Wiki or that it has anything to do with SNK (Playmore) whatsoever. 22:21, March 7, 2010 (UTC)
All of it eh? Even though they bought the rights to use a lot of it anyways and published the some of these games under their name? They also did official illustrations themselves as a company to advertise things like the Fatal Fury movie and take opportunities when they can to mention them in random games. I find it strange how you want to exclude things such as the animes, especially when the company themselves have to approve of it being made before it can be done. Without SNK giving permission for them, they would have never existed. So in essence, they do have a part in them albeit small. There's also the thing with the Neo Geo, you have to intimately know the console system to be able to create a game for it. This means they would've had to talk to SNK to figure this out. Some of these games are purely exclusive to the Neo Geo. However, SNK could've refused them and thus again the games would not have existed in their current form. SNK has a hand in everything included on this wiki no matter how small it seems which is more than enough for me not mind including it. Besides, the motto of the wiki is to share "anything you'd like to share with us about the company". So long it has some kind of relation to SNK it's fine. Kyosei 23:27, March 7, 2010 (UTC)
"Anything you'd like to share with us about the company?" Bah! That is still not enough to relate to SNK. But ADK was a subsidiary of SNK, so it's appropriate. 23:47, March 7, 2010 (UTC)

The wiki's icon

Am I the only one that finds it really odd that the icon representing the wiki in its top left corner comes from a card card that, yes, covers SNK fighting games, but also several other licenses? It's even odder considering the icon seem to have come from that game, yet only recently did I find the game itself had no article in the wiki so I had to create one. The wiki might be better off being represented by something with a less mixed origin... IkariLoona 15:06, August 19, 2010 (UTC)

I think you're referring to the wiki's logo rather than icon which in that case I was thinking of changing anyways. However, laziness and procrastination has gotten me stuck on how it should look like. I was either going to make it look rather simple with just the SNK font logo with the word wiki underneath it. Or do the SNK font logo and the word wiki underneath it with random SNK characters behind it. The former might be too simple (not a bad thing) and the latter feels a bit too cluttered. For my part, I think the simpler approach would be better since its a logo. Simple logos are easier to remember and less worry about who would have to be in the logo if I had used the second approach. I was mostly done with that version too except I was stuck on what font to use for the word "Wiki" underneath. I was thinking to try and get a similar font they use for the word "Playmore" for "Wiki" but haven't found a compatible one which means I'll have to customize the letters myself. This is where the laziness factor comes in lol. Kyosei 18:52, August 19, 2010 (UTC)

Artwork for every game

I'd like every game information to include a section about "artists" or "artwork" and indicate who artists did the artwork for the game and the in-game illustrations. In the current design of the wiki is hard to find who did the artwork for a game you want to know, and I can't find the artists who did the artwork for the World Heroes series games. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Magegg (talkcontribs)

We've already done that with the illustrators category and when you click on a file page like Kyo's KOF XIII image. Not to mention that we will mention who has done artwork for a game, if it is known, during the intro paragraph. However, SNK has added new artists over the years but don't make very clear which artist is which. Without knowing for sure we can't credit their newer illustrators. Also for a topic like this, please take it to either the community portal or our forums. This talk page is to discuss the wiki's Main Page. Kyosei 01:00, February 24, 2011 (UTC)

Should we change it to something else every once in a while? It's a bit boring seeing the same old article and is this stuff handel manually or automatically? Dnoryu (talk) 14:51, September 4, 2017 (UTC)
