Meta Slug : Awakening (メタルスラッグ：覚醒) is a run and gun mobile game developed by TiMi Studios in partnership with SNK for iOS and Android. It was revealed at the Tencent Games Annual Conference 2020.[1] The game was released in China on April 18, 2023 and in Southeast Asia on August 22, 2023.
The global version was released on July 17, 2024 for iOS and Android. The Steam version, however, had to be delayed to July 19, 2024 after the site's awaiting for its review and approval.
Times and events for the Chinese and SEA versions are set at UTC+8. Global times are at UTC-5.

Lyla, a young girl guided by her father from a young age. Lyla delved into the world of invention, gleefully crafting a myriad of prank gadgets and enjoying a carefree life. However, her happiness ended when the Morden Army invaded the town. With her home destroyed and her father missing, Lyla was driven by anger and became a guardian of peace, determined to fight the Morden Army to the end. |

Eva Glenn was once one of the best fighter pilots alive, her skills in the skies dazzling as she flew between the bullet hails and billowing smoke of numerous dogfighting battles. Yet due to a dastardly plot, she was forced to step down from her cockpit. Ever since then, she went into hiding, conducted investigations, and engaged in battles, using her actions to show those who tried to ground her just how wrong they were. For even if an eagle's wing might be clipped, it will not stay grounded for long; its destiny is to sour the skies again. |

Haran comes from the ancient highlands in the north. The chilling wind and snow are engraved in his soul. Like his mysterious homeland that disappeared in the war, Haran is an enigma. Some say he's a decorated general, and some say he's just a wanderer that travels from pub to pub. Haran has been enjoying the freedom of traveling alone without a destination, but he's also aware that one can never truly be free as long as the war doesn't end. |

Gru Kang was an ordinary kangaroo who lived his happiest moments with his wife on the grasslands, competing with other males for love, and occasionally boasting to his wife about the scars he'd acquired in his battles for her affection. However, a secret bio lab appeared on this no man's land. Those devils that called themselves scientists captured native animals for their experiments, and Gru, unfortunately, became one of the captives. To make things worse, his son Locke also shared his perilous predicament. For Locke's safety, Gru cooperated with the experiments, and his body transformed, gaining enhanced strength and intelligence in the process. He secretly gathered a set of high-tech armor and gained the ability to communicate with humans with the voice device in the armor. There was even a mechanical pouch to protect Locke from harm. With everything prepared, he took advantage of the laboratory accident and made his escape. The day they regained freedom, Locke stuck his head out of the pouch and looked curiously at the strange world. Gru Kang stared lovingly at his little child and made up his mind — he was going to find his wife and give his son home and a brighter future. Even though he still doesn't fully trust humans nor has he forgive them for the harm they did, he doesn't mind teaming up with these cunning creatures as long as Locke can grow up in a peaceful and happy environment. |

Scarlett grew up in a happy and wealthy family. Her father was a corporate executive, and her mother was a former tennis player. She inherited her mother's talent and enthusiasm in tennis and had worked hard to one day compete in the professional leagues since her childhood. Scarlett had her first-ever setback during her debut match, but instead of backing down, she was more determined to become better at tennis. Soon, she met a lot of friends, made her breakthrough, and earned glory through training and matches. However, the war spread and completely changed the course of Scarlett's life. All professional tennis leagues were terminated, and her best friend was hit in the wrist by a stray bullet and became no longer able to hold a racket. For the first time, Scarlett truly understood the meaning of war and grew to despise it. Determined to bring the vilest warmongers to justice and prevent future tragedies, she resolutely joined the ranks of the Regular Army. |

- Metal Slug Awakening marks the second time characters from Honor of Kings collabs with an SNK IP after Gongsun Li's appearance in Samurai Shodown (2019).
- This is the second run and gun game in the series to feature voice acting. The first one being Metal Slug (3D).
- As well, this is the first 2D run and gun game to feature voice acting.
- Tarma, Gru Kang and Trevor are currently the only characters who hasn't took any major role in any World Adventure level nor limited time events.
- When Hyakutaro Ichimonji launches his spirit balls, sometimes he'll yell "Hadouken!", alluding to the key technique of Ryu, Ken, Sakura, Gouken and Akuma from the Street Fighter series.
- Rather than having an english voice actor, Kyo Kusanagi reuses his voice clips from The King of Fighters '97. Same thing happens with Mai, who currently doesn't have Rebecca Rose reprising her role in the game.
