In this Chinese name, the family name is "Jin".

Jin Chonshu (じん 崇秀ちょんしゅ) is a character from the Fatal Fury series and who also makes an appearance in Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. Chonshu first appeared as one of three bosses in Fatal Fury 3, supposedly appearing to be the last boss following Ryuji Yamazaki.

If the player performed well, Chonshu's brother Chonrei would be fought as the true last boss afterwards. If the player did not do well throughout the course of the game, then the player's character would fight Chonshu in one of the first two stages. Otherwise, Chonshu would fight in the third stage. After defeating Chonshu, his older brother Jin Chonrei appears. Regardless of whether or not Chonrei was reached, the player's character's ending would play afterwards.

He is voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi.

Story[]

Jin Chonshu is the younger twin brother of Jin Chonrei, both of whom descend from an ancient and formidable bloodline. When the twins were just six years old, their parents perished during a deadly epidemic that swept through their hometown. On his deathbed, their father told them of Qin Wanglong (秦王龍), also known as Jin Ouryuu, a legendary ancestor said to have served under Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. Wanglong was a revered general, credited with slaying a thousand soldiers single-handedly, and was the original author of the mystical Jin Scrolls, ancient texts believed to hold secrets of power and immortality.

Before passing away, their father insisted that the blood of this mighty warrior ran through their veins. Orphaned and alone, Chonshu and Chonrei struggled to survive, growing up with a strong sense of pride in their lineage—but also developing resentment and distrust toward others. At age fourteen, a brutal encounter with a gang of bullies left them beaten and half-dead on the streets. As they drifted into unconsciousness, their bodies were possessed by the spirits of their ancestors—descendants of Wanglong—who had waited over two millennia for the opportunity to return.

Chonshu became the vessel for Qin Hailong (秦海龍), also known as Jin Kairyuu, a ruthless and cunning spirit who transformed the frail boy into a deadly combatant. Chonrei, the older twin, was possessed by Qin Konglong (秦空龍), or Jin Kuuryuu, Hailong’s elder brother and a stoic, more composed presence. These two ancestral spirits, both sons of Wanglong, aimed to recover the three ancient Jin Scrolls, which they believed would allow their full resurrection in immortal bodies and the realization of their conquest of the modern world.

In Fatal Fury 3, the possessed twins manipulate events from the shadows, sending Ryuji Yamazaki to South Town to locate the scrolls. However, many other fighters are drawn into the conflict, each with their own motivations. Ultimately, when the twins are defeated in battle, the ancestral spirits are expelled from their bodies. The conclusion of the game implies that the ancestors’ grand vision was merely a delusion born of obsession.

In Geese Howard’s storyline, he acquires all three scrolls but instructs Billy Kane to destroy the scrolls, realizing the danger they pose. In alternate endings where either Chonshu or Chonrei defeats Geese, they recover the scrolls—only for Chonrei to angrily tear them apart, rejecting the cursed legacy that nearly destroyed them. Chonshu tries to stop him but ultimately fails. Unbeknownst to them, the scrolls are mere replicas, swapped by Billy.

The twins are later taken in by Tung Fu Rue, who aims to guide them toward a more peaceful life. In Real Bout Fatal Fury 2, Chonshu attempts to forge his own path by training under Kim Kaphwan, seeking to escape the shadow of his past and differentiate himself from his brother.

In Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, new revelations shed further light on their lineage. The Jin clan is now more fully explored as an ancient sect with deep ties to Chinese imperial history and mystical arts, who had an ancestor migrate to Europe. The influence of Wanglong and his descendants is recontextualized, suggesting that the spiritual possession of Chonshu and Chonrei was not a random event but part of a long-orchestrated plan embedded within the bloodline to reincarnate. Furthermore, it is revealed the Krauser or formally, Stroheims are their distant relatives, including Rudolph, Wolfgang, Geese and Rock, and that there is a third brother among the Jins, whose reincarnation is Rock. This also explains why Wolfgang Krauser and Geese possessed a part of the Jin Scrolls, and why the Krauser bloodline and its descendants had immense, borderline inhuman powers.

Personality[]

Chonshu is very stubborn. He does not know when to lose and has a strong desire for revenge, but after Real Bout, the two brothers seem to be repenting. He's also very sarcastic and openly very taunting towards his opponents, but it belies a whimpering soul deep down inside as the younger brattier foil to his older brother.

Despite also objecting to his brother's eventual conclusion to be free from the spirits that possessed them during that fateful day, he and Chonrei after such an event start to seek better things in life without the influence of the spirits that resided in their bodies.

Trivia[]

  • Spiritually, him, his brother Jin Chonrei, and Ryuji Yamazaki's originating appearance hearken back to the John Carpenter 1986 martial arts cult classic Big Trouble in Little China.
  • It should be noted that unlike their ancestors, Chonshu and Chonrei's given names are written in alternate/butchered Japanese-styled Chinese as opposed to on'yomi in Japanese or proper pinyin in all other contexts; Chonshu's name would be rendered properly as "Shin Sūshū".
  • In the PC version of Fatal Fury 3, Chonshu is the final boss. His brother Chonrei dose not seem to be in that port, and Yamazaki is only a mid and sub-boss in that port.
