The King of Fighters All Star (ザ・キング・オブ・ファイターズ オールスター) is a free-to-play, mobile beat’em up RPG game developed by Netmarble Neo, published by Netmarble and authorized by SNK. It is playable on iOS, Android and Microsoft Windows. The game brings together characters from the four main sagas of the King of Fighters series.
While including KOF series fighters, the game has also included limited-time crossover events with other franchises and companies. Notable crossovers include Gintama, Samurai Shodown, Tekken, WWE, Seven Knights, The Seven Deadly Sins, Dead or Alive, Guilty Gear, Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, and Virtua Fighter. In addition to crossovers, the game also holds special events that introduces unique versions of its’ fighters, such as a holiday theme, or a genderbent version.
Release History
The game initially released in Japan on July 26, 2018. After high demand from South Korea, the game was released there on May 9, 2019, having gone through tests at events there since the end of 2018 and holding special venues for promotion. Netmarble announced a release date for global regions (including The Americas, Europe and China) for October 22, 2019, with pre-registering being available until then. Additionally, due to the game's successful performance on mobile devices, a beta version of the game for Windows PC was released to in 2022.
The game was ultimately a success for all regions and has been one of the most successful mobile games for The King of Fighters franchise up to date.
Crossover History
- Gintama - First updated in October 12th, 2018 for Japanese servers only. On July 23rd, 2020 a 2nd event was released, this time being released in all versions. 1st event Added Gintoki Sakata, Shinsuke Takasugi, Sougo Okita and Toushirou Hijikata with Kagura and Isao Kondou being free and unlockable, respectively. 2nd Event added White Yaksha Gintoki Sakata, Kamui, Kotarou Katsura, & Elizabeth, with Elizabeth being given for free while Kagura and Isao Kondou are unlockables.
- Samurai Shodown IV: Amakusa's Revenge - First updated in May 20th, 2019 for Japanese and Korean servers. Added Haohmaru (not his KOF counterpart), Genjuro Kibagami, Charlotte Christine de Colde and Rimururu with Ukyo Tachibana and Shiro Tokisada Amakusa being free and unlockable, respectively.
- Tekken 7 - First updated in November 20th, 2019. Added Jin Kazama, Kazuya Mishima, Heihachi Mishima, Ling Xiaoyu (alongside a second variant) and Paul Phoenix with Jin’s Tekken 6 Player 1 costume and Armor King II being free and unlockable respectively. Updated on August 18th, 2022, with Hwoarang (alongside a second variant), Alisa Bosconovitch, Nina Williams (alongside a second variant, which is free to unlock) and Devil Jin.
- WWE - First updated in May 13th, 2020. Added Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, John Cena, Mark "The Undertaker" Calaway, Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch with Kofi Kingston, "The People's Champion" variant of "The Rock" and the "Doctor of Thuganomics" variant of John Cena being free and unlockable, respectively.
- Seven Knights - First updated in November 26, 2020. Volume 1 adds Rudy, Shane and Rachel Agni, with Rachel being given for free. "Dellons" Snolled Black Scythe and Eileene Heron were added in Volume 2 around early December 2020.
- The Seven Deadly Sins: Dragon's Judgement - First updated in March 30th, 2021. Volume 1 adds Meliodas, Ban, Merlin, and Elizabeth Liones, with Elizabeth and the "Tavern Master" variant of Meliodas being given for free. King Harlequin, Diane, and the "Dancer" variant of Elizabeth Liones are included at Volume 2 around at early April 2021.
- Dead or Alive 6 - First updated in July 29th, 2021, which adds Kasumi, Marie Rose (free unlock), Nyotengu, and Honoka, along with the "Angel of Paradise" variant of themselves. Original variant of both Marie Rose and Honoka are unlockables for free; while original variant of Nyotengu, and Angel Paradise versions of Kasumi and Honoka are included at Volume 2 in early August 2021.
- Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 - First updated in November 22nd, 2021, which adds Baiken, Dizzy, I-No, and Ramlethal Valentine, with Sol Badguy and May being given for free.
- Street Fighter - The first round represents Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, first updated in March 24, 2022, which adds the veteran heroes Ryu and Chun-Li, and a recently introduced Luke Sullivan, while Chun-Li's Alpha variant requires a Gacha unlock, her Classic variant being given free, followed by the veteran villains Akuma and M. Bison were added at the end of March 2022. On November 28, 2023 the second round represents Street Fighter 6, which adds the veterans Ken Masters, Guile, Cammy White and the anti-heroine Juri Han in their appearances in the current mainline game alongside the Street Fighter V version of Cammy's Classic variant, with both Guile's classic variant and the seventh mainline Street Fighter represented new fighter Jamie Siu being free to unlock.
- Soul Calibur VI - First updated on December 21, 2022, which adds Cassandra Alexandra and Taki, with the Soul Calibur V Player 2 costume of Ivy Valentine and the Soul Calibur IV Player 1 costume of Cassandra being given for free. Volume 2 adds Seong Mi-na and Ivy on December 28, 2022.
- Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown - First updated on April 25, 2023, which adds Akira Yuki and Pai Chan in the first volume, with the original 1993 Virtua Fighter low poly variants of Akira Yuki and Sarah Bryant being given for free. Volume 2 adds Jacky Bryant and post-Virtua Fighter 3 version of Sarah's Virtua Fighter 2 on May 1, 2023. As part of collaboration, it adds original 1993 Virtua Fighter low poly-style of KOF-regular characters for free and can be unlocked outside crossover events as well, starting from Kim Kaphwan and Rugal in the first round.
Story
The player wakes up in the world of The King of Fighters without any memory to remember. With the help of an energetic girl named Noah, the player must participate in the tournaments from The King of Fighters '94 (and onward), and wins the tournaments in order to regain their memory.
Starting from the very beginning (KOF '94), the player must go through each chapter (categorized in specific years) of each saga with the Ash Saga being the most recent update.
Features
While including all fighters from the main KOF series, the game implements a gacha system where certain characters are only available for a limited time. These "festa" characters are only obtainable through summons and not by regular unlocking.
Another feature is the battle card system, where certain special moves are unlocked by equipping a matching battle card suited for the specific fighter. Depending on the card, it unlocks super skills that may cost from three bars to five bars of power with having weaker stats for lesser costs. Most cards need to be pulled or manually selected (with the use of tickets), but some are unlockable through Epic Quests (usually costs three bars).
The game also features multiple remixes of BGM's from previous installments depending on the character or his/her team. In addition to soundtracks, the game also includes many stages reminiscent of previous SNK series and respective franchises (for crossovers i.e. Tekken).
