Kensou unwillingly using the Dragon Spirit to save Athena's life at the end of The King of Fighters '99. This power can be seen draining Bao's energy as well.
The Dragon Spirit was first activated in The King of Fighters '99 during the Psycho Soldier Team ending. During the collapse of the NESTS base after Krizalid's defeat, Athena Asamiya was caught underneath broken debris. Kensou went back in to save her, during which the NESTS base exploded. Chin Gentsai, Bao, and Kaoru Watabe watched the explosion from afar when Kensou appeared, carrying Athena while surrounded by powerful energy. Shortly afterwards, Kensou passed out from using that power, with Bao also passing out as well.
The power is brought up again in The King of Fighters 2000. Prior to the events of the tournament, Chin suspects that the Dragon Spirit is connected between the two boys. His theory is because Kensou used the Dragon Spirit, its power was transferred to Bao, and completely drained Kensou of his Psycho Power. Despite this, Kensou decides to enter KOF regardless if he has his Psycho Powers or not. During the Psycho Soldier Team ending, Bao destroys the Zero Cannon by absorbing its second shot, at the cost of his own well being. Kensou suddenly gets his powers back, and learns that the power is transferred between the two if one of them is gravely injured.
Prior to the events of The King of Fighters 2001, Bao became unable to shoot a Psycho Ball and Kensou's powers was completely drained of his powers for a time, before Kensou learned his powers again. During the Psycho Soldier Team ending, Bao explained that Kensou somehow absorbed the Dragon Spirit into him. At the same time, a man named Ron oversees this info and reveals to himself that the Dragon Spirit could be awakened even further, and how its power was powerful than the entirety of the NESTS cartel.
Kensou left the Psycho Soldier Team in The King of Fighters 2003 in order to fully understand his new power. He rejoins in The King of Fighters XI, with Kensou now fully regaining his powers and mastering the Dragon Spirit. This pleases Ron, as he is waiting for the perfect opportunity for Kensou to reawaken the Dragon Spirit so that he may claim its power for his own.

- The Dragon Spirit in The King of Fighters series is inspired of Psycho Soldier, where Kensou could morph into a dragon.
- The deeper meaning of the Dragon Spirit's importance has yet to be revealed. Its power was mentioned by Saiki during an interaction with Kensou in The King of Fighters XIII.
