"Her body is surrounded by a holy world! A shaman who can hear the cries of the earth! DOLORES."

Dolores (ドロレス) is a character from The King of Fighters series. She is a new character introduced in The King of Fighters XV as a revered hermit psychic, as well as a member of the new Rivals Team with Isla and Heidern. Her official nickname is "Hidden Wisdom" (隠匿いんとくする賢者けんじゃ).

Development[]

Creative director Eisuke Ogura stated:

"Dolores is deeply related to Kukri plot-wise, and so her design had to fall in line with his. You can see how her control of holy soil is similar to that of Kukri's sand. We didn't have a specific form of traditional garment in mind when designing her, but that we wanted her to be both refreshing and cool, while also beautiful enough to set her apart from other characters."

Appearance[]

Dolores is a dark-skinned woman with an appearance that mixes both her prepossessing and conspicuous features. She's tall attributed with her heels, has green eyes and wears gold-colored glasses. Dolores hair is in a braided style with white and purple locs, on the end of her locs she has violet jewelry. Her attire is a cutout black jumpsuit that divides around her revealing midriff connecting at the waist; she has a matching black thong and arm sleeves. Her bewitching tattoos are geometric in shape, and she has them on her thighs, shoulders, back and stomach, lastly she wears her bedazzling gold necklace that's parted with a purple jewel in the center.

Personality[]

A revered hermit in the Hinterlands of Africa, Dolores has allied herself with the Ikari Commander Heidern. Apparently one of the many resurrected through the evil creature Verse, Dolores may hold the key to its secret, however her connection to it remains a mystery.

Dolores is a meek, calm, and respectable woman; she can be seen as the moral compass for the current formation of Team Rivals. This is shown when Isla tries to get confrontational with Shun'ei, Dolores halts Isla, not wishing for an unnecessary fight. She trust her teammates and their abilities completely, having faith that Shun'ei and Isla can save the world if they cooperate and believe in their powers. She appreciated the Ikari Warriors Team, with them having a mutual respect, and she is more than happy to assist them again if a threat arises once more. Her most complex relationship, however, is with her adoptive son and disciple Kukri.

While Kukri shows his rebellious side toward Dolores, he still acknowledges her as "Teach" despite him being arrogant. Dolores cares for her adoptive son and even if he's defiant towards her she still tries her best to make sure he's on the right path. Most of Dolores' motherly qualities is also expressed with Isla; she guides and provides support, even though Isla stubbornly refuses to admit her need for help. In the brief interaction with Nakoruru, Dolores openly appreciated her endearment. Dolores, in kind, honors Nakoruru as "Great Shaman". They both have a deep connection to the spiritual realm and engage in practices related to spiritualism. Despite this, Dolores reminds Nakoruru that she must fight, for it is her own will in fate.

Powers[]

  • Psionics - Her psychic medium capabilities allow her to contact the spirits of the earth.
  • Geokinesis - Imbued with holy powers, she uses holy soil to combat her foes. Dolores can control mud and rocks, being able to change its state and reshape it at will.
    • Mud Manipulation - During some of her moves, the earth spirit can be seen emerging from within the mud puddles.

Skills[]

  • Astronomy - She is well-versed in this discipline, being knowledgeable about the stars and cosmos.
  • Volleyball - She is especially skilled in Beach Volleyball.

Fighting Style[]

Dolores utilizes her ground-based powers in various ways, such as for teleportation, set-up moves and trapping her opponents, as well as being able to generate solid rocks in the form of stalagmites and boulders to crush the opponent. She has some hand-to-hand techniques using backfist, heavy kicks, palm strikes, to counter her opponents and their anti-air attacks.

Etymology[]

Despite being from Mali, an African country, her name is Spanish in origin and literally means "sorrows". The name is a reference to Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (La Virgen María de los Dolores, Our Lady of Sorrows), one of the many titles of Mary, Mother of Jesus, in Christianity.

Trivia[]

  • Dolores, from a story perspective, acts similarly to Chizuru Kagura during the events of The King of Fighters '96; both serving as someone greatly connected to a powerful force (Orochi for Chizuru, Otoma Raga for Dolores) and trying to unite two powers as one (Kyo and Iori for Chizuru, Shun'ei and Isla for Dolores) to stop its threat. Additionally, both acts as the middle ground between the two's rivalry.
