"Her opponents all go home with broken bones! She'll have you singing the blues...! BLUE MARY." - The King of Fighters XV

Mary Ryan (マリー・ライアン), better known as Blue Mary (ブルー・マリー), is a character from both the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series. Her first appearance was in Fatal Fury 3 as a private detective. Her official nickname is "S Class Woman" (Sエスクラスのおんな).[2], and in The King of Fighters XV, is "The Joint Crusher" (JOINTジョイント CRUSHERクラッシャー).

Personality[]

Blue Mary is very friendly towards everyone, but she knows (or thinks) that her job must come first before everything else. Mary developed a strong bond with Terry, they seem to have a genuine care and fondness with each other. Based on one of her victory quotes, as well as from other characters, and her new nickname, Mary sometimes has a fetish side on breaking her opponents' bones/joints with her joint locking-based moves.

Abilities[]

  • Ignore weight - Mary can throw her opponents, regardless of their weight.
  • Energy Attacks - Mary can fuel her attacks and throws with ki energy. It can be shown as a red rose, a pink splash or red/blue streaks.

  • Motorcycle Riding - Mary knows how to ride a motorcycle very well.
  • Detective skills - Blue Mary has had extensive training in deep background investigation.

Fighting style[]

Blue Mary employs the fighting art of combat Sambo, which originated in the Soviet Union. This martial art uses striking and grappling techniques and is particularly well-known for its flying jointlocks, which she does make extensive use of.

Trivia[]

  • According to the magazine Neo Geo Freak, she is modeled after Android 18 from the Dragon Ball series.
  • Being a private investigator, she is evocative of the main character LAPD Sergeant Pepper Anderson, as portrayed by actress Angie Dickison, from the 1970s police drama Police Woman.
  • A music video of her song "Blue Mary's Blues" is a reward for those who beat Real Bout Fatal Fury Special with Mary.
  • The cocktail she takes her alias from is a mysterious drink. From the drinker's perspective, the drink is a deep clear blue. From other angles, it appears to be transparent like water.
  • Her win quote against Ángel in The King of Fighters XIV highlights the fact that Mary hates cats.
  • In the Neo Geo Freak's 1997 Volume 8 character poll, she was voted as the fourteenth favorite character with a total of 705 votes,[3] and in the character popularity poll on Neo Geo Freak's website, she was voted as the fifteenth favorite character with a total of 857 votes. And in Neo Geo Freak's August 1998 issue, she was ranked as the 9th best character.[4]
  • Starting from The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match, SNK uses her complete alias in the select screen and next to the life bar.
  • Similar how she used her EX counterpart's default color palette in Real Bout Fatal Fury Special Dominated Mind, her unused design from The King of Fighters XIV artbook is instead being used for her appearance in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, but with white crop top.
