A Blow Back Attack (とば攻撃こうげき) is a recurring universal mechanic in The King of Fighters series.

Input
Most KOF Appearances except KOF 2003 & KOF XI
KOF XI A fifth button

Description[]

A Blow Back Attack will send a grounded opponent knocked back a distance, making it a standard universal knockdown tool for all characters (and can also be done in midair).

However, as of KOF XIV, Blow Backs can inflict an anywhere-wallstick hit effect, where the victim will crumple to the ground upon impacting the wall even if does not happen to be in the actual corner.

In many games, Blow Back Attacks are usually cancel-able via Special Moves, which means that it can be followed up with a combo or blockstring. In the case of combo'ing from them however, a counter hit is required since the knockdown effect from them normally prevents the victim from being hit by anything else. Though for blockstrings, Blow Back Attacks often provide solid blockstun and may aid in the attacker's attempt to guard crush the defender easier, with most jumping Blow Backs providing strong jump-in pressure or on hit, an advantageous knockdown without landing recovery.

Due to the Multi-Shift System in The King of Fighters 2003, Blow Backs were removed, and many of them became command moves/normals like a few others prior, though The King of Fighters XI has the Blow Back universally performed once more with a fifth button (referred to as E) by default that doubles as the button for Leader Super Moves/LDMs (some characters still have certain classic Blow Back moves done as command normals however). Starting with The King of Fighters XII however, they have returned back to the input.

Like many normal attacks, a number of Blow Back Attacks have names of their own via in-depth Japanese sources, albeit some of their names may only be unveiled if some of them have been converted into command normals.

Noticeable Blow Back Attacks[]

Stinger 2001
Heidern's Stinger move was originally his Blow Back attack prior to The King of Fighters XIV.
Raikou Mawashi Geri CVS
Geese's Blow Back Attack being known as the Fudou Kassatsu Uraken (不動活殺裏拳ふどうかっさつうらけん; lit. "Motionless Life-or-Death Backfist") was originally one of his Last Blast attacks in the older Fatal Fury games, but has also turned into a command normal in quite a few other games, sometimes with an overhead property such as in Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. It has also appeared in Tekken 7.

However, in midair, his Raikou Mawashi Geri acts as his midair Blow Back, unlike its grounded variant which never had any knockdown properties whatsoever.
